The ultimate neighborhood bar turned music mecca is celebrating half a century of quenching the thirsts of local consumers of adult beverages – or as their website says, “getting S. Broadway drunk since 1962.”

In addition, owner Allen Roth and son Mike are celebrating 30 years of presenting great live music on the Hideaway stage. Herman’s – founder Herman Roth passed away in 1997 – has hosted more than 25,000 bands, ranging from up-and- coming unknowns to notable bands with local roots like Big Head Todd and the Monsters, the Subdudes and Opie Gone Bad, as well as nationally renowned headliners including The Fray, Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, Phish, Brett Dennen, Tab Benoit, Doug Kershaw and others.

A few doors up from Herman’s, our good friend John Ludwig has announced his intention to close the doors on Birdsall & Co. Home & Garden Collection, 1540 S. Broadway, after 23 years in business.

Birdsall has long been known for top quality garden tools and accessories, as well as outdoor/patio furnishings, fountains, etc. Ludwig will begin a Retirement Clearance Sale on July 5 with savings of 20 percent off the entire inventory. Discounts will increase as time goes on and remaining inventory diminishes. Ludwig expects Birdsall to close for good sometime in late summer or early fall.

The evolution of S. Broadway continues in earnest, as longtime foodie Alex Waters has completed the transformation of his restaurant at 1294 S. Broadway from Bistro One to 3 Monkeys Cantina.

Waters’ new eatery aims at a more broad-based audience, featuring spicy Tex-Mex cuisine and refreshing margaritas, in addition to other fine adult beverages.

Currently open for dining and/or drinking from 4p.m.-to-close daily, 3MC offers inside dining or a comfy streetside option. When the weather is right, kick back on the expansive patio facing onto Louisiana Ave., which makes an excellent spot for people-watching thanks to newly-arrived Buffalo Doughboy Bakery and longtime Broadway anchor Pasquini’s Pizza within easy eyeshot.

Up north on that strip of Broadway dividing the Baker and West Washington Park neighborhoods – or perhaps, finally, bringing them together – party fiends are embracing the words of one of our favorite troubadours – John Hiatt – who sings:

Adrift is, in fact, open at 218 S. Broadway. This is good news for local revelers who wondered, when the property – apparently built out – sat motionless for many months, no doubt awaiting some sort of behind-the-scenes gyrations.

“Good things come to those who wait,” says the old saw, and early reports on Adrift are quite good. Evoking images of Hemingway’s Key West, patrons are greeted with tactile bamboo walls, bright colors, subdued lighting and servers as effervescent as the cocktails they put forth.

Exotic drinks with tiny umbrellas are the reason most folks make the pilgrimage to Adrift. The Missionary’s Downfall, the Zombie, the Painkiller and the Scorpion Bowl await you. The kitchen – guided by chef Wade Kirwan – puts forth a tempting selection of small plates/tapas to keep hunger at bay quite nicely.

Kudos to our friend Steve Shurack and the musical crew at Broadway Music School, 1940 S. Broadway, as they raise a glass in honor of their 7th anniversary of teaching people to make the music that “has charms to soothe the savage beast.”

Shurack worked seven days a week for several years renovating the two buildings that house the school, while coordinating the schedules of some three dozen teachers as well as teaching and performing himself – whew – Steve, you rock!
